A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N are the ten Medigap plans currently available on the market. Medicare Supplement Plan E was a Medigap plan that previously included certain Medicare Part A and Part B costs, as well as blood transfusions, preventive services, and treatment required when traveling abroad.

The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act was passed in 2003Trusted Source. Initial Medicare and Medigap plan services were drastically altered as a result of this law. Medicare + Preference, the Medicare managed care initiative, was renamed Medicare Advantage as a result of this law (Part C). Via private arrangements, Medicare Part D, the prescription drug insurance program, became available to all beneficiaries.

The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act was signed into law in 2008. This reform introduced a number of changes to Medicare, including those that had a significant effect on Medigap plans. Due to Medicare reforms, Medigap plans E, H, I, and J were discontinued as a result of this legislation.

No new Medicare enrollees were qualifying for Medigap Plan E as of June 1, 2010. Anyone who was participating in Medigap Plan E prior to its cancellation in 2010 may be able to retain their plan and benefits.

The following Medicare expenses are covered by Medigap Plan E:

Coinsurance for Part A and hospital expenses
Coinsurance for nursing home treatment in Part A
